In 2014 movement within staircase 5 was discovered, with cracks appearing within rooms and throughout the stairwell. After consultation with structural engineers it became clear that the original oak-beamed timber frame would require extensive remedial works.
After completely stripping out all floors from the ground upwards a lattice of steel beams was inserted to stabilise the structure.
Unfortunately, in 2015 similar cracks appeared within staircases 3 & 4. These cracks are now being monitored and no further significant movement has been seen. However, it is thought likely that the ravages of time that caused the work in staircase 5 may yet see us having to deal with staircases 3 & 4 in the same way. The likely costs of such an undertaking will be in the order of £300K per staircase; on top of this project cost we would be obliged to rent alternative accommodation for those displaced.
