A quad in name but not nature. Previously the rear of the buildings consisted of a series of dark walkways and derelict and abandoned spaces, notably the former garden of Kybald Twychen. In the refurbishment, and to a design conceived by the Bursar, the walls that divided Kybald Twychen and New Building have been removed to create a light and welcoming garden and terrace with an ‘in the round’ performance area that is wired for both light and sound.
A light quality sandstone has been employed throughout the entrance and garden area to give a unified feel to the area and to elevate the sense of a quality space in which time should be spent. Access and lighting have been major concerns and the new entrance has louvered gates that permit a sight of the space beyond when returning to the building after dark.
It is hoped that this area will prove popular and that the area will become a space valued by all.
